Left Forum (Vasemmistofoorumi) and The KSL Civic Association for Adult Learning (Kansan Sivistystyön Liitto KSL) are organising a joint seminar on the thinking of Antonio Gramsci and especially his concept of hegemony. How could the Gramscian concept of hegemony be used in the analysis of contemporary society and politics? There are two international guest speakers, Peter Thomas and Sara Farris present and also Mikko Lahtinen from the University of Tampere will give a presentation. The seminar The Struggle for Power - the Gramscian Challenge for Politics will take place on Wednesday, October 28th at Balder-sali (Aleksanterinkatu 12) in Helsinki from 5 pm to 7.30 pm. The entrance is free.

Capitalism ´09 seeking alternatives to global capitalism - watch the videos!

Capitalism ’09 is part of a series of international events that focus on the analysis of contemporary capitalism. The event took place at the Old Student House in Helsinki on April 23. Speakers were Stephen Gill (York University), whose research interests include new forms of political agency and the political and juridical constitution of global capitalism, Isabella Bakker (York University), who specialises on global economic system and gender hierarchies, researcher and climate activist Tadzio Müller, who is a critic of Green capitalism, Hilary Wainwright, Research Director of the New Politics Programme at the Transnational Institute and editor of Red Pepper magazine and Oras Tynkkynen, MP of the Green party. There were also other international and Finnish guests present. Video footage of Capitalism ´09 event is now available on the Left Forum website.

The new Transform! website is launched

Transform! Europe has launched a new website. The opening site consists of three sections: Events, Projects and Articles. The section Events hosts Transform! Europe events, any event by a Transform! Europe organisation and events which are supported by Transform! Europe. The section Projects is dedicated to Transfrom! Europe projects and projects by Transform! Europe organisations and comprises of articles on the project topics (e.g. at the moment on global crisis). The section Articles comprises of articles on various topics. The Transform! Europe Journal is also available on the website. 

 

The site is now online at www.transform-network.org.

 

 

 
Coming up: Capitalism ´09 and World political rock event on April 23

Capitalism ’09 is part of a series of international events that focus on the analysis of contemporary capitalism. On Thursday, April 23th from 11 am to 4 pm the Old Student House in Helsinki (free entry) becomes a venue for discussing alternatives to the capitalist world system. The evening will continue at a World political rock event with political debates and vibrant music performances (Cafe Mascot, Neljäs linja 2, tickets 5/7 euro, from 7 pm to 2 am). Performing bands are Maria Gasolina and Porvarihallitus.
